Iran Plans Nuclear Power Plants at Five Coastal Sites

(MENAFN) Iran is moving ahead with plans to build nuclear power plants at five coastal locations as part of its strategy to expand nuclear energy in the national power mix.

According to reports, Mohammad Eslami, vice president and head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, made the announcement during a meeting with parliamentary energy and construction committees, as reported by a media outlet.

He said the projects are being developed under Iran’s long-term nuclear strategy document introduced in 2022, which outlines expansion of nuclear-generated electricity.

“Based on this document, the construction of nuclear power plants at five coastal locations is on the agenda to increase the share of nuclear electricity in the country’s energy basket, and these projects are progressing according to plan,” he said.

Eslami also stated that Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant has produced more than 80 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity so far, which he said has helped save large quantities of crude oil and natural gas by reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

He added that construction work on the second and third units of the Bushehr facility is ongoing under a multibillion-dollar investment program, describing it as one of the country’s largest infrastructure projects.

Bushehr, Iran’s only operational nuclear power plant, is located on the southern Gulf coast and is connected to the national electricity grid.
