US Tells India It Will Not Allow Iran to “Hold Energy Markets Hostage”
(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Washington will not allow Iran to disrupt or control global energy markets, according to a US State Department statement following their meeting in New Delhi.
The statement said Rubio emphasized the strategic importance of the US–India relationship, highlighting shared democratic values, expanding economic opportunities, and close ties between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Modi. It also noted that Rubio extended an invitation for Modi to visit the White House on behalf of Trump.
During the talks, the two leaders also discussed developments in the Middle East. Rubio reportedly said the United States would not allow Iran to “hold the global energy market hostage” and suggested that increased US energy exports could help India diversify its supply sources.
The discussions come as India has reportedly resumed oil imports from Iran after a years-long pause, amid shifting sanctions dynamics and ongoing regional instability affecting global energy flows.
Both sides agreed to deepen cooperation in trade, defense, and critical technologies, including efforts tied to broader economic initiatives aimed at significantly expanding bilateral trade in the coming years.
Rubio also separately noted in media remarks that US concerns over energy policy are linked to broader geopolitical considerations, including the war in Ukraine and efforts to adjust global energy dependencies.
