US reveals China’s determination to presume in buying oil from Russia
Recently, US President Donald Trump shortened his original 50-day deadline for a Ukraine peace agreement to just 10 to 12 days, threatening comprehensive sanctions if no deal is reached. These sanctions could include 100% secondary tariffs targeting nations importing Russian exports.
Russian officials have condemned Trump’s warning, arguing that it hampers peace efforts in Ukraine.
Bessent also mentioned that pending legislation in the US Congress would empower President Trump to levy tariffs as high as 500% on buyers of sanctioned Russian oil, potentially encouraging US allies to enact comparable measures aimed at cutting off Moscow’s energy income.
“I think anyone who buys sanctioned Russian oil should be ready for this,” Bessent told reporters, underscoring the seriousness of the proposed penalties.
